Create The Ultimate Mudroom

Everyone has it.  The place where all the “stuff” goes.  For some families, it’s a kitchen table when you walk in the door, for others it is the front closet. But, if you are one of the lucky ones it is a mudroom.  A mudroom is a room in your home (usually located between the garage and the rest of the home) where you can store your coats, shoes, bags, and everything in between.

Recently, mudrooms have evolved to incorporate the style and design of the rest of the home. More than ever homeowners are thoughtfully considering each design element, from storage to lighting, in their mudrooms. If you want to create the ultimate mudroom for your home, consider these elements for yourself before digging in on your project.

Flooring

If there is one thing your mudroom is going to see a lot of, it is mud. Through rain, sleet, snow, and hail shoes will make their way into your home with the mudroom as the first line of defense. So, when you are choosing the flooring for your mudroom it is important to choose something that is durable and long-lasting.  Some of our favorite mudroom flooring choices include ceramic tile, vinyl, or brick. Each of these flooring choices offers their own benefits. But, if you want to choose a look that is hot this season, we highly recommend ceramic tile that looks like wood!

Storage

As we mentioned, your mudroom is going to be the catch-all for a lot of your household items. Therefore, you will need a storage solution that will conveniently organize it all.  Some of our favorite mudrooms incorporate pre-used items such as vintage lockers or large baskets. However, you can always custom build cubby storage or bench storage specifically for your family!

Functional Features

The mudroom is one room in the house that should be SPECIFICALLY designed just for your family. Therefore, we suggest incorporating design elements or features that will benefit you and your loved ones.  One of the most loved features we have seen in mudrooms is a built-in shower/bath system for the four-legged family members. This feature helps to keep a mess out of the rest of your home and can also conveniently be used to shower off the kids if they have too much fun as well.
