Checklist for Building a New Deck

It’s almost spring in central Maryland and that means it’s time to get outdoors and get to work on creating your best yard for summer entertainment.  If you’re lucky that means cleaning up a few gardens, sealing the deck, or power washing the patio. If you really want to go above and beyond this summer, however, and create a backyard you and your friends will love – it’s time to build a new deck!

Building a new deck is not overly complicated, but it does require a bit of preparation, hard labor, and attention to detail.  Today, we’re going to focus on what you need to do BEFORE you build a new deck so you can feel confident that you are on the right track to backyard bliss!

DETERMINE DECK SIZE AND SHAPE

Believe it or not, every deck doesn’t have to be a perfect rectangle or square! There are a number of different shapes, sizes, and configurations by which you can build your deck and the one you choose depends on where the deck will be located. Some of the most popular deck shapes have special areas built-in for a grill, hot tub, or bar. Keep in mind you can also design your deck to have multiple levels, custom railing widths, and unique flooring patterns.

CHOOSE MATERIALS

Decks can be built with a wide variety of materials.  What materials you choose for your deck depends on how much work you want to put into deck maintenance, how much money you want to spend, and how often your deck will be used. A few of the most common deck materials are composite wood, cedar, and pressure treated wood.

OBTAIN A PERMIT

Once you have determined the size and shape of your deck and the materials you will build your deck out of, you will need to obtain a permit before you build.  Permits will ensure you are following all protocols and laws related to building a new structure and can most often be obtained from your city office.
